Kipling Bohnert, PhD

Dr. Bohnert received his B.A. in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University and his Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Michigan State University. Following the completion of a postdoctoral fellowship in Health Services Research at the University of Michigan and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, he joined the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan and the VA Ann Arbor Center for Clinical Management Research. He held these appointments until his arrival as Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Michigan State University.

Dr. Bohnert’s research seeks to better understand the causes and consequences of substance use, substance use disorder, and other mental health conditions, as well as help identify and address gaps in care for individuals with such conditions.

Causes of substance use, substance use disorder, mental health and substance use, medical vs. recreational cannabis use, PTSD and substance use, health service needs of individuals with substance use disorder and other mental health problems, health outcomes for people who use drugs and alcohol
